Mal propped himself up in the bunk on one elbow.
âMal,â said Simon. âYouâre back with us.â
âYeah,â Mal rasped, âand kinda wishinâ I wasnât, given how everythingâs hurting so much. Wouldnât be so bad if someone hadnât gotten herself of a mind to use me as a punch bag.â
âI was doing you a favor,â Zoë said. âI hadnât butted in, Ornery Annie would have carved you a new smile with that shiv of hers.â
âYeah, I realize that.â
âA thank-you would be nice.â
âIâll say thank you once my face is no longer throbbing like a sonofabitch and I can open this eye of mine fully again.â Mal tried to sit up, and let out a gasp of pain. âYeowtch. Tà i kÅng suÅ yÅu de xing qiú dÅu sÄi jìn wÅ de pì gÅ.â
âBest if you try not to exert yourself,â Simon advised.
âYeah, Iâm gettinâ that impression, Doc.â Mal lay back down. âJust so happens Iâve been awake awhile and Iâve been laying here listeninâ to you all flapping your yaps.â
âSo youâve heard about Dr. Weng then,â said Zoë.
âHeard everyone thinks heâs dead.â
âYou donât?â
âAll there is, is assumptions. Itâs assumed Weng didnât get to another correctional unit. Itâs assumed he died out there in the snow. What if he didnât?â
âYou think he could still be alive?â
âHeâs a doctor. Heâs a smart guy. He couldâve found shelter, a food source, figured out how to survive. Why are we writing him off just âcause everybody else has?â
âOkay,â said Jayne, âletâs say he is still alive somewhere out there, which I donât believe for one moment, but whatever. Itâs a big damn planet. He could be anywhere. Youâre proposinâ we head out and start searching an entire world? Itâd be like looking forâfor something tiny in somewhere large.â
âLike a needle in a haystack, you mean, Jayne?â said Simon.
âYeah, but I never understood that expression. Why would you even look for a needle in a haystack? If you want a needle, whynât you just buy yourself one from, like, a needle shop or something?â
Simon said nothing.
Mal said, âIt ainât necessarily that big of a task, Jayne. We know where Weng was aiming for. Those mountains. Could he have gotten over them, gone beyond? Maybe, but itâs unlikely. You mustâve seen âem on the way in. Theyâre huge, jagged, probably impassable. More likely he stopped when he reached them. We go that-a-way, we stand a good chance of coming across him.â
âDo we, Mal?â said Zoë. âOr is that just what you want to think?â
âYou saying Iâm kiddinâ myself?â
âIâm saying your head isnât clear. Dr. Weng is Inaraâs last hope and youâll do anything to cling on to that. Youâll have us hunt through a vast tract of wilderness in subzero temperatures for who knows how longâdays, maybe weeksâwhen thereâs not even any guarantee that the person weâre hunting for is still breathing.â
âWe even find him,â Jayne added, âmight be heâs frozen solid, like a human popsicle. Or heâs lining the floor of a grizzly bearâs cave.â
âItâs just ridiculous.â Zoë softened her tone a fraction.
